Behavioral Interventions for Clients with Dementia and Cognitive Decline

I treat problematic behaviors and emotional states that can arise as a result of dementia or other cognitive dysfunction.  This includes an assessment of why the behavior(s) are occurring, and a corresponding plan for addressing them.  Problematic behaviors I address include:

  • Anxiety or agitation

  • Frequent calling out or requests for help

  • Inappropriate sexual behaviors

  • Wandering/falls risk

  • Frustration or confusion

  • Paranoia

  • Sleep disturbances

Facility/Staff Training and Development

I provide in-service training for staff of skilled nursing and assisted living facilities in areas such as managing problematic behaviors, working more effectively with family members of patients, and how to best support patients with various mental health diagnoses.  My approach focuses more on the practical application of psychological and behavioral principles, and includes an interactive component where staff present challenges they are currently encountering and leave with possible interventions that they can quickly implement.

I have several years of experience in education and training with a wide range of audiences, and genuinely enjoy it.  If you are interested in arranging for a staff training at your facility, please contact me by phone or email to discuss your needs and how I can best assist you.
